Capital campaigns

California Lutheran University’s recent capital campaigns include the Steven D. Dorfman Center and the Swenson Science Center. The goal of this project was to develop distinct, appropriate branding for each campaign, building upon established slogans and messaging while giving each initiative a unique visual identity.

School of Management ‘Forward Together’ Campaign

Steven D. Dorfman, the former Vice Chairman of Hughes Electronics and former CEO of Hughes Space and Communications, provided the lead gift for a new building for the School of Management.

Inspired by the glass curtain walls in the proposed architectural design, translucent white and yellow shards were incorporated throughout the print materials. These materials were used by university major gift officers and team members to promote the campaign, encouraging endowments and long-term support.

The campaign was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ultimately did not achieve its original goal of establishing a new building.

Despite the unexpected challenge, the university and Dorfman’s continued partnership and commitment led to the redirection of the funds. This made the launch of the new center, Steven Dorfman Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, possible.

Science Initiative “Be a Catalyst” Campaign

The capital campaign for a new science building started from the university’s vision; to provide more experiential learning opportunities for students and increase access to science education for a diverse student population.

The color scheme of the brochure, purple and fluorescent pink, comes from the key art on the cover. The featured background images have been treated with the duotone effect in the same colors.

After years of collective effort, the science initiative campaign was successfully completed and resulted in the opening of a new $34 million science facility. The Swenson Science Center is a three-story, 47,000-square-foot structure with labs and collaborative spaces for students and faculty. The dedication ceremony for the center was held in October 2021.
